Kek!” It came cracking through the bony fingered forest canopy in the cold February air. I wheeled around to follow the sound. “Kek!” Another small hawk, the size of a crow, flashed by, with a long tail and wide bands. It was unmistakably a Cooper’s Hawk, the skilled and fierce predator of other birds. Outside of breeding season coops are considered solitary. The sign activates our Swimming Upstream AR app, an augmented reality artwork that animates hyper-real images of fish that used to be plentiful in the river. From August 26-30 2023, six artists brought diverse perspectives to connect the history of the park with contemporary social and environmental concerns and experiences. They helped us think about way-finding, home, identity, play, plants, and the land we stand on. Artists Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Vince Ha, Noah Scheinman, and Evalyn Parry activated spaces in Belle Park on various days throughout the week through music and temporary installations. An exhibition at Art and Media Lab in the Isabel Bader Centre ran concurrently showing work by Jung-Ah Kim, Elyse Longair, and Vince Ha. Together, the art in the gallery and in the park suggested ways of engaging with this rich space with an uncertain future. Norton's recent works are interactive as a means to explore physical and virtual forms of communication, as seen in her kinetic sculpture, augmented reality apps, and particularly in her multimedia installations. Her videos and installations have been exhibited nationally and internationally and have won multiple awards.
